Education Development Sessions (EDS)

Residents will provide a total of 12 hours’ worth of educational development sessions (see EDS opportunities below). After each session, faculty and the resident will meet to discuss feedback and self-reflection.

Stroke inpatient teaching for nurses

  • Total commitment: 1 hour
  • Limit of 2 sessions (duration: 15-30 minutes)
  • Coordinated by the stroke program coordinator
  • Usually presented during the stroke inpatient service on Thursdays at 1:00 pm

Medical student teaching sessions

  • Total commitment: 1.5 hours
  • Limit of 2 sessions (duration: 15-30 minutes)
  • May occur during resident’s general neurology or stroke inpatient rotations
  • Resident selects the topic and presents with faculty supervision
  • Each session must be on a new topic to count towards the requirement

Lecture or workshop on a neurology topic

  • Total commitment: 3 hours
  • Duration: 30 minutes
  • Lecture and workshop ideas include, but are not limited to:
    • Morning Report
      • Select a faculty member ahead of time who will be providing teaching-specific feedback
      • Incorporate elements of evidence-based teaching principles
    • Noon Lecture
      • Should be paired with a faculty member (i.e., acting as a fellow)
    • Other lectures
      • Disease specific lectures or cases
      • Structured RITE reviews
      • Basic science/research/clinical trials
      • US Healthcare systems and Finances
      • Bootcamp/Intern orientation lecture
    • Topics include, but are not limited to:
      • Neuroimaging
      • EEG
      • EMG
      • Sleep studies

Dedicated bedside teaching cases with the medical students

  • Total commitment: 1.5 hours
  • Occurs Thursday afternoons (duration: 60 minutes)
  • Coordinate with Dr. Tarula
  • Choose an interesting patient on service and guide students on how to achieve the following:
    • Elicit a history based on chief complaint
    • Perform a systematic neurologic exam
    • Develop a differential diagnosis and plan
    • Provide example of a good and complete presentation
    • Provide feedback to the students and receive feedback from the students and faculty member

Phase 1 and Phase 2 medical student Case-Based Learning (CBL) sessions

  • Total commitment: 1.5 hours
  • Duration: 90 minutes
  • Phase 1 sessions coordinated by Drs. Ruff and Tarula
  • Phase 2 sessions coordinated by Dr. Chacon
  • Held during the months of October and November
  • Discussion-based cases on neurology topics
  • Cases are pre-developed and ready for facilitation

Teaching through Cognition and Neuroanatomy course for Phase 3 medical students

  • Total commitment: 1.5 hours
  • Duration: 60 minutes
  • Explores the link between brain structure and cognitive function through clinical cases (e.g., stroke, epilepsy, dementia) with integrated instruction on neuroanatomy, neuropsychological testing, and brain imaging.
  • Facilitated by Dr. Nankee
  • Usually held during the spring
  • Present a lecture on topics including, but not limited to:
    • Neuroanatomy
    • Vascular cognitive impairment
    • Interactive jeopardy-style discussions

Liaison Committee of Medical Education (LCME) Member

  • Total commitment: 2 hours
  • For residents interested in curriculum development
  • LCME accreditation confirms that a medical school’s MD program meets national standards for structure, function, and performance
  • Available for 1-2 residents per year to serve on the task force
  • Involves joining two main meetings per year
  • Attend meetings virtually when possible (2nd Monday each month, 8:30 – 9:30 am) and review occasional documents or QI plans that pertain to residents’ involvement in medical student education
