Neuromuscular Medicine Fellowship

Neuromuscular Medicine Fellowship

Letter From The Program Director

Michael HansenI would like to welcome any interested applicants to apply to our Neuromuscular Medicine Fellowship. Our fellowship is designed to fulfill the requirements for ABPN subspecialty certification for Neuromuscular Medicine. In addition, fellows will fulfill the requirements of the ABEM certification for electrodiagnostic medicine, as well as the neuromuscular ultrasound certificate of added qualification.

We are a tertiary referral center for Neuromuscular Medicine and provide a full range of care including clinical and neurodiagnostic evaluation. Our outpatient clinic sees the breadth of neuromuscular conditions, and has active multidisciplinary clinics through the ALS foundation and the MDA foundation. We have five board certified adult neuromuscular neurologists. Opportunities are available to rotate through pediatric neuromuscular neurology clinics. Our electrodiagnostic laboratory performs both routine and advanced nerve conduction studies and electromyography, including single fiber electromyography. Additionally, our laboratory performs neuromuscular ultrasound which fellows can learn throughout their training. Fellows will have the opportunity to learn needle muscle biopsy technique as performed by our neuromuscular staff in the clinic setting. We also have an active nerve and muscle pathology laboratory with weekly multidisciplinary pathology conferences. In addition, there are opportunities to learn to perform and interpret skin biopsies.

The focus on fellowship is 50% clinical and 50% neurodiagnostics with opportunities to pursue specific interests throughout the fellowship year. Effort is made to have fellows follow patients longitudinally, including personally performing electrodiagnostics on patients that the fellow evaluated clinically.

We enjoy a collaborative team approach to patient care with a balanced approach to clinical duties and academic activities. The University of Wisconsin is a world class university located in Madison—a medium-sized city with the cultural amenities and cosmopolitan atmosphere of a larger city while still enjoying the friendliness, pace, and ease of daily life you would expect in the Northern Midwest.
