Neuromuscular Medicine Fellowship

Program Overview

Introduction

Neuromuscular

The purpose of this handbook is to provide useful general information for neuromuscular fellows, to define responsibilities of the fellow and to improve academic development. The material presented is not inclusive, rather it focuses on how the faculty, fellows and support staff function as a team of professionals dedicated to advancing care for patients with neurological diseases; and work together to train the next generation of clinicians caring for patients with neurological diseases.

The Neuromuscular Fellowship is a one-year learning experience designed to train the physician in the field of neuromuscular medicine. The participating institutions include The University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics (UWHC), the William S. Middleton Veterans Administration Hospital (VA) and the American Family Children’s Hospital (AFCH). The responsibilities of the fellow outlined here are applicable to all of these institutions. Although the administration policies of the respective hospitals may be unique, they should not take precedence over the professional duties and assignments of the fellow.

The University of Wisconsin fellowship training program in in neuromuscular medicine seeks neurology and/or physical medicine and rehabilitation residents who have completed an accredited neurology or physical medicine and rehabilitation residency in the US and who are dedicated to the care of people with diseases of the peripheral nervous system, have demonstrated interest in clinical and basic neuroscience, and show promise of future achievement. For over 50 years, the Department has been dedicated to training highly motivated physicians in an atmosphere that emphasizes teamwork, close interaction with attending physicians and resident colleagues, independence and development of sophisticated skills in clinical neurophysiology examination utilizing NCS, EMG, and other neurodiagnostic techniques to aid in the evaluation and care of patients with neurological disorders in general and in particular, neuromuscular disorders.

The fellowship program provides one positions per year.

Fellowship Description

UW-Health is a tertiary care facility associated with a world-class university, The University of Wisconsin-Madison. Fellows will work within the neuromuscular section in the Department of Neurology in our busy outpatient clinic which evaluates the breadth of both common and rare neuromuscular conditions. Our fellows will participate in multidisciplinary care through our ALS and MDA clinics. In addition to ~50% clinical focus, ~50% of time will be in neurodiagnostics including our EMG laboratory. Fellows will learn advanced NCS/EMG techniques including cranial nerve evaluation, repetitive nerve stimulation, and single fiber EMG.  In addition, our fellows will have the opportunity to learn neuromuscular ultrasound. Fellows will have the opportunity to learn needle biopsy techniques, as well as learn evaluation of nerve and muscle pathology through our weekly pathology conferences. Elective time will be provided for those who wish to pursue research or any other area of interest.
