Neuroendovascular Surgery

Neuroendovascular Surgery Schedule:

  • Pre-round on inpatients
  • Rounds, procedures, or clinic
  • Noon conference
  • Clinical care activities, procedures, or clinic in the afternoon

Expectations:

  • Attend scheduled procedures. Fellows may observe and/or participate per interest and comfort level.
  • Attend emergent procedures (thrombectomy, treatment of vasospasm, etc) that occur while on service. Fellows may observe and/or participate per interest and comfort level.
  • Attend scheduled neuroendovascular clinic days. In clinic the fellows are expected to evaluate patients, staff with the attending, and complete documentation.
  • Fellows may be asked to evaluate and document consult follow-up notes for inpatients being followed by the neuroendovascular service.
  • Fellows may be asked for stroke consults on patients seen for procedures with the neuroendovascular team; they should be willing to complete these consultations if time allows or inform the inpatient consult team if appropriate.

Supervision:

The assigned neuroendovascular surgery faculty member for that day.

Didactics:

  • Neuroradiology Conference – second and fourth Mondays at 07:30 in F2/401 (required)
  • Neurovascular Conference – second and fourth Mondays at 16:00 in F2/401 (required)

Goal and Objectives:

Patient Care

  • Goal: Fellow development of patient care skills sufficient for the safe and effective independent practice of vascular neurology
    • Objective: Exposure to the population cared for by neuroendovascular surgeons, and their approach to the diagnosis and management of these patients
      • Evaluation: Faculty evaluation of direct supervision of patient care
    • Objective: Exposure to neuroendovascular surgical procedures
      • Evaluation: Faculty evaluation of direct supervision during neuroendovascular surgical procedures

Medical Knowledge

  • Goal: Fellow development of medical knowledge sufficient for the safe and effective independent practice of vascular neurology
    • Objective: Understanding of the science of neuroendovascular surgery sufficient for clinical care
      • Evaluation: Faculty evaluation of medical knowledge based on discussions during patient care

Practice-Based Learning and Improvement

  • Goal: Fellow development of practice-based learning and improvement sufficient for the safe and effective independent practice of vascular neurology
    • Objective: Effective evidence identification and appraisal for clinical questions
      • Evaluation: Faculty evaluation of this ability as questions arise during clinical care where the fellow is asked to find evidence

Interpersonal and Communication Skills

  • Goal: Fellow development of interpersonal and communication skills sufficient for the safe and effective independent practice of vascular neurology
    • Objective: Effective discussion of end-of-life care options
      • Evaluation: Faculty evaluation of direct supervision of these discussions
    • Objective: Effective discussion of procedural care options
      • Evaluation: Faculty evaluation of direct supervision of these discussions

Professionalism

  • Goal: Fellow development of professionalism sufficient for the safe and effective independent practice of vascular neurology
    • Objective: The fellow will learn ethical, regulatory, and legal aspects of neuroendovascular surgical care, including the difference between standard and investigational tests and treatments
      • Evaluation: Faculty evaluation of direct supervision of these care issues

Systems-Based Practice

  • Goal: Fellow development of systems-based practice sufficient for the safe and effective independent practice of vascular neurology
    • Objective: The fellow will demonstrate the ability to work in a multidisciplinary fashion with nurses, case managers, social workers, therapists, primary care physicians, and the various medical and surgical specialties involved in the care of neuroendovascular surgical patients
      • Evaluation: Faculty evaluation of direct supervision of interactions with these groups
    • Objective: The fellow will learn how to triage patients and allocate resources such as inpatient beds, tests, and treatments to provide high quality, cost-effective care
      • Evaluation: Faculty evaluation of direct supervision of patient care
