Synaptic Physiology of Epileptiform Activity

The main goal of my laboratory is to understand the synaptic physiology of the hippocampus and how that circuitry favors epileptiform activity. We use the hippocampal slice preparation and intra- and extracellular recording techniques to study synaptic potentials and currents in CA3 pyramidal neurons. The hippocampal slice preparation is capable of generating epileptiform activity when convulsants are applied acutely or following lesions that alter the intrinsic synaptic circuitry.  We are studying the effects of 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2DG), a glucose analog and an anti-epileptic compound, on the membrane and synaptic excitability of CA3 neurons.

Rodent Model of Posttraumatic Epilepsy

The other area of investigation being pursued is the investigation of posttraumatic epilepsy in rats produced by a controlled cortical impact.  This model is being used to define neurophysiological and anatomical biomarkers that are associated with the development of post traumatic epilepsy.  In addition potential treatments to prevent the development of epilepsy are being studied.
